About the founder

Justin Winkelmann.
Marine systems to marine enterprise.

Founder of Waking Giant Marine, former Royal Canadian Navy Marine Systems Engineering Officer, and hands-on marine electronics prototype developer.

A systems mindset.
A practical foundation.

Justin’s marine background was built around the operation, maintenance and technical management of complex vessel systems. His Royal Canadian Navy experience includes service aboard HMCS St. John’s and HMCS Toronto, technical authority work within the Department of National Defence, and staff officer and departmental leadership at HMCS Griffon.

Working around integrated marine machinery and electrical equipment shaped an approach based on understanding the system as a whole: what is visible, how components interact and what evidence is needed before drawing a conclusion.

Through Waking Giant Marine, he applies that background to independent marine assessment and product development. His work includes the James Whalen tug hull survey and consultation report and the design and prototyping of a multifunction marine navigation display.
